Smakbyn´s neighbours
Smakbyn is located a stone’s throw from the mediaeval castle of Kastelholm in Åland, on the shores of the vast inland sea Lumparn. In addition to the mighty castle, we have the Ålandic homestead Jan Karlsgården and Åland Distillery as neighbours across the road, as well as the old prison Vita Björn.
Take a look at our map below to find out more about Smakbyn’s lovely neighbours!
Next to Kastelholm Castle is the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, where you can take a look at traditional Åland carpenter traditions. At midsummer, a midsummer party is organised at Jan Karlsgården, with a traditional midsummer pole.
The prison museum Vita björn is also located in the area, and has a long history in the prison system in Åland.
For those visiting Åland by boat, we can recommend the Blue Flag-certified Kastelholm guest harbour. The beautiful harbour is just a few minutes' walk from the castle and Smakbyn.
Kastelholm gästhem offers accommodation and is only 700 metres from Smakbyn.
Kastelholm Castle
The star here in Kastelholm is of course the castle, a well-preserved castle ruin with many exciting stories in the stone walls. Throughout the ages, the castle has undergone sieges, fires and royal visits. Some kings have come to hunt while others have been imprisoned.
